Gypsy boy missing at hospital
Chennai: An eight-month-old baby boy went missing near the government Royap­e­t­t­ah hospital in the early hours of Saturday.
The boy, Karthik, was brought to the hospital by his parents, Venkatesh, 30, and his wife, Shanthi, 28.
They belong to the Narikurava community and stay at a settlement near the Pallavaram cantonment, the boy’s father said.
According to the boy’s uncle, the family had come to the hospital on Friday morning to get him treated for a fever. After staying in the hospital till 6 pm that day, they were told to visit the hospital again on Saturday.
On Friday night, the family of four adults and four children, including the missing child, were sleeping on the platform outside the hospital premises, he said.
The boy’s father had taken medication and was supposedly sleeping soundly when a passerby alerted another relative, noting that the child was crying around 12 pm, he added. At 1 pm, the child’s aunt woke up to find him missing and immediately, the family approached the GRH police outpost on the hospital premises.
According to a police officer, the control rooms were alerted immediately. After searching at many places, the child was nowhere to be found till Saturday evening, the police said. The GRH police have registered a case and are investigating further.
According to a police official, there are chances that the baby was kidnapped by gangs that use children for begging as the baby was too young to go anywhere on his own.
“There is no picture of the baby available with the family and we have asked them to look at crowded places like Central station, T. Nagar and other areas and coordinate with the local police,” the police added.

Bellary: IAS officer M.E. Shivalinga Murthy was arrested by the CBI, Bengaluru branch, in connection with the alleged illegal mining carried out by Associated Mining Company (AMC), owned by jailed former minister Gali Janardhan Reddy. 
He is the first serving IAS officer to be arrested in a case related to the alleged illegal mining in Bellary belt. The CBI had earlier arrested retired additional chief secretary N. Vishwanathan and former secretary of mines department Shamim Banu in connection with Deccan Mining Syndicate’s case.

Depressed techie immolates self, body found after 5 days
Bengaluru: A 34-year-old woman techie is said to have immolated herself, about five days back, at her house in K R Puram police limits. She did not leave behind any suicide note.
The deceased has been identified as C. S Vidya, a native of Chennai. Police said Vidya was a software engineer employed as a freelancer for a Pune-based company. She had reportedly moved from 
Pune to her K.R. Puram residence on New Bazaar Street in Bengaluru three years ago. Vidya was unmarried and stayed alone at her rented house.
The incident came to light around 7.30 am on Saturday, when Vidya’s landlord Venkat Prasad came to the building to clean the overhead tank.
On his way out, he passed by Vidya’s house on the first floor and experienced foul smell. He knocked on the door and window, but received no response.
He informed the police and they broke down the main door to find Vidya’s burnt body lying on the floor, with an empty tin of kerosene nearby.
No suicide note was recovered from the spot, said the police. They suspect Vidya might have killed herself at least five days ago. The exact reason for the suicide is not known, but preliminary investigations revealed that she could have killed herself from depression.
The police said that the neighbours claimed that Vidya was a quiet girl, who kept to herself and never went out much, except for work. She had reportedly told her immediate neighbours that her parents were dead and her relatives were all in Chennai.
The body has been taken to Ambedkar hospital mortuary and Vidya’s relatives in Chennai have been informed. A case of unnatural death has been registered by the K R Puram police.

Bengaluru: A 30-year-old, accused of murdering a man five years ago, was allegedly stabbed by the victim's brother in Cottonpet police limits on Friday night. The injured, identified as Fai­roz, was stabbed by five men near Vinayaka The­atre as he was returning home on Friday night.
The police said Fairoz had been arrested after he murdered Satish five years ago and was relea­sed last year. Appu decided to avenge his brother's death after learning that Fairoz was out of jail.

RPF cop held for train theft
Chennai: This is a cops-and-robbers story with a difference. In this case, an RPF constable was arrested and remanded for stealing the wallet of a woman passenger.
According to railway sources, Tindivanam RPF constable Pandi who was travelling in the Egmore-bound Uzhavan Express stole the wallet of a woman travelling to Chennai.
The mistake that the errant cop committed was trying to use the woman’s credit and debit cards using a single pin number that she had saved on her mobile phone. The RPF constable kept trying out several cards for more than a few minutes inside the ATM, unmindful of the fact that he was being watched by a constable on patrol duty.
The suspicious constable took Pandi to the police station, where he revealed his identity and admitted to stealing a passenger’s wallet. Pandi was later handed over to Otteri police, where he was booked and remanded to judicial custody.

Rs 11.5 lakh worth gold missing
Chennai: Around 50 sovereigns of gold jewellery, worth `11.5 lakh, and cash were reported stolen from a bakery owner’s house near Porur on Saturday evening.
Mayandi runs a bakery and lives with his wife Janaki at Annai Velankanni nagar in Madanandapuram, near Porur, the police said.
On Saturday evening, Janaki had opened the almirah in her house and was shocked to see around 50 sovereigns of gold and cash missing from it, the police added.
On information, the Mangadu police arrived at the spot and conducted an enquiry. Investigations revealed that the valuables worth `11.5 lakh were in place until yesterday but were missing.
The Mangadu police have registered  a case of robbery and are investigating the matter further.

Chennai: The city police on Saturday arrested one more person in connection with Thursday’s robbery in which Rs 15 lakh was robbed from a passenger at knife-point in a running bus in Mylapore.
The police nabbed Diw­an, supposedly the mast­erm­ind, based on the clues provided by the ot­her four arrested on Fr­iday. The police had recovered `4.5 lakh from him. Added to the `3.5 lakh re­co­vered earlier, they have so far recovered Rs 8 lakh.
Raja Subbiah, a native of Triuchy district, was travelling by 21G bus on Thursday night from Broadway to Tiruvan­miy­ur when the robbers sn­atc­hed his cash bag.
Investigations revealed that Mani alias ‘Trouser’ Kumar was in dire need of cash and he approached Mohammed Ali to lend him money who suggested he meet Diwan.
Diwan said they target people who take loans from moneylenders in the Broadway area as he had sources to tip him. Mani and his two friends – Rajan alias Santhosh Ku­mar and Syed Ilyas - dec­ide­d to carry out the pla­n.
They got into the bus at Kannagi statue and started a quarrel with the victim and tried to snatch his cash bag. They then managed to pull the victim out of the bus and escape with the bag.
The police have so far arrested Rajan, Mani, Sy­ed Ilyas, Mohammed Ali, Prakash and Diwan. “We are looking out for three more persons – Abubacker Siddique and Kajaa of Broadway,” said the police.

Cop commits suicide at home
Chennai: A special sub-inspector committed suicide by hanging at his residence in Avadi police quarters on Saturday. Identified as Muthiah, 52, the SSI, attached to the Avadi tank police station, was suffering from epilepsy and other health issues, the Avadi police said.
According to police sources, the SSI had been on leave for the past 20 days and was depressed over his health problems. He had also applied for voluntary retirement twice, but had been rejected by the police headquarters, the police said.
The Avadi police have registered a case and are investigating.
