Mysore: The temple committee of  the 1000-year-old Sri Cheluvanarayana Swamy at Melkote has suspended its High Priest Narasaraja Bhat for pocketing gold and silver ornaments gifted to it by a devotee.
The eight-member committee met late Monday evening and decided to suspend the priest with immediate effect and the official orders were passed on Tuesday.
The decision was taken based on a report by Pandavapura Assistant Commissioner R. Latha, who found the priest guilty of making away with valuables worth lakhs  gifted to the temple in 2009.
As a temporary arrangement, the committee has replaced the High Priest with his brother, Varadaraja Bhat, who is the co-priest. While locals objected to his appointment, head of the committee, Ramesh Raju clarified that the arrangement was only for three days to make sure there was no interruption in the daily rituals.
The committee has in the meanwhile asked the office of the Endowment Commissioner to take a decision on who should replace Narasaraja  Bhat.
It has also recommended an investigation by a government agency like the CoD into various allegations of misappropriation in Melkote.
