Condemned ripper, killer of 7, jumps jail again
Thiruvanthapuram: Ripper Jayanandan has again proved that jails cannot contain him for long. A crude ladder made using poles and dhotis, hung on cloth line for drying, helped Jayanandan and another convict Prakash alias Ooppan Prakash jump the 20-foot wall of the Poojappura central prison during the wee hours of Monday. Five prison officials were suspended in this connection.
Jayanandan alias Jayan, 45, of Kodungallur in Thrissur, was involved in seven murder cases and sentenced to death, while Ooppan Prakash, 45, of Oachira, was involved in 19 cases. Jayanandan had a history of jumping the Kannur central jail in 2010 and a futile attempt to break the Viyyur central jail by making a tunnel from the prison toilet.
After breaking the prison cell's lock using a hacksaw blade, the two cell mates climbed the prison’s huge wall by making a crude ladder using the dhotis and poles used to give support to plantains. The poles were tied together using the dhotis that were put for drying.

Afterclimbing the top of the wall, the dhotis were tied together to make a long rope and the two climbed down. The incident came to light after some prisoners noticed the dhotis hanging from the prison wall.
To mislead the jail warders, the two had also placed two crude dummies resembling two persons sleeping in the prison. The incident is suspected to have taken place between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m.
Incidentally, a surveillance camera near the cell in which the two were kept had become defunct a few days back, while the recording system of the other surveillance camera systems in the prison was defunct for over the last several months. Senior prison officials, including DGP Prisons Alexander Jacob, visited the spot.
The police launched a massive hunt for the two and sounded an alerted in neighbouring districts and states. A police team led by city crime detachment assistant commissioner K E Baiju is probing into the incident. It is also suspected that the two were involved in the theft of a two-wheeler from Poojappura and chain snatching incidents near Vellayambalam and Manvila on Monday morning.
Deputy jailor P R Rajeev, chief warden P V Ibrahim, head wardens Abdul Rasheed, Prathapachandran and Rajeevkumar were suspended. Police sources said that Jayanandan, who was involved in seven murder cases, was undergoing death sentence for the murder of Devaki, 51, of Puthenvelikkara. He committed murders for robbery.
After jumping the Kannur central prison in June 2010, he was held from Ootty along with his wife. Subsequently, he was shifted to Poojappura. Ooppan Prakash , who was involved in several abkari cases in Thrissur, Ernakulam and Kollam districts, was convicted for a three-year rigorous imprisonment last year.

Bengaluru: A woman, who reportedly refused to have a physical relationship with her boyfriend, was allegedly assaulted and pushed out of a moving autorickshaw by him and his friend in Kumbalgod on Monday evening.
The victim, Ghousia (name changed), is a resident of Channapatna and works at a toy shop. The police detained her boyfriend Nayaz, an auto driver and a native of Ramanagar, and his friend Tipu, a resident of Bapujinagar on Mysore Road.
The police said that Ghousia and Nayaz met four months ago and fell in love with each other. Ghousia, an orphan, was staying with her relatives. When Nayaz promised to marry her, she left them and came with Nayaz a week ago. He had kept her at his friend Tipu’s house. Tipu stays with his wife and other family members.
“Nayaz visited Ghousia every day and allegedly pestered her to have a physical relationship with him. But Ghousia reportedly told him that she would not consummate their relationship unless they got married. This had led to a quarrel between them. On Monday evening, Nayaz and Tipu took her in an autorickshaw and were going towards Ramanagar.
On the way, the couple had a quarrel over the same issue and following this, she was assaulted by the duo and pushed out of the moving rickshaw near Kumbalgod,” the police said. The passersby who saw it chased the rickshaw, nabbed the duo and handed them over to the police. Nayaz has reportedly told the police that he is in love with the girl and intends to marry her.
“He claims that she jumped from the rickshaw after a heated argument and denies pushing her out,” a police source said. Ghousia, who sustained minor injuries, was treated as an outpatient at a hospital. She has reportedly accused Nayaz and Tipu of trying to rape her.

Chennai: A woman police constable attempted suicide by jumping from the terrace of the police quarters in Pudupet early Monday morning after a fight with one of her colleagues during roll call.
According to the police, woman constable Santhi, 22, a native of Dindigul, jumped from a height of 15 feet after a quarrel with another constable, Kavitharani, on Mondaymorning.

“Because of this, Santhi stared quarrelling with Kavitharani saying that because of her behaviour all girls from Dindigul were getting a bad name. Santhi had complained about this with an in-charge sub-inspector on Sunday.
On Monday morning, during roll call, Santhi reportedly raised the issue again. Her superior, however, was not very keen on taking action on oral complaints. Seeing the cold response from the sub-inspector, Santhi went up to the terrace and jumped from there,” said police sources.
The woman suffered head injuries besides multiple fractures on her bones.“She is serious and it will take at least three days for her condition to improve,” doctors attending on her at the Rajiv Gandhi government general hospital said.
