Cricket fixing: cops seek ED hawala probe
The Delhi police has asked the Enforcement Directorate to initiate a probe into alleged hawala transactions in the IPL spot-fixing scandal. A police source said on Sunday: “The probe into the spot-fixing scandal has revealed that there have been hawala transactions not just in India but also abroad, as in Karachi and Dubai. We have written to the ED as they have expertise in investigating hawala transactions”.
“The Delhi police have also provided a list of all accused (27) arrested in connection with this case to the ED. The police also mentioned the alleged links of some arrested persons with fugitive underworld don Kaskar Dawood Ibrahim and his close associate Chota Shakeel in its letter to the ED”, the source said. Establishing the money trail will be vital in this case.
The ED has already registered a separate case against the accused players under stringent provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. The ED registered the case after going through the Delhi police FIR which had led to the arrest of three Rajasthan Royals players — Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan — and over 10 bookies. ED sleuths will soon record statements by all arrested players and bookies, ED sources said. The ED is also examining reports by all agencies probing the case: the Delhi and Mumbai police and the income-tax department.
