CPM plans new party rule book
The CPI(M) top leadership on Thursday began the process of discussing and preparing its new ideological approach to be adopted at the party congress to be held next year even as former West Bengal chief minister and senior politburo member Buddahdeb Bhattacharjee remained conspicuous by his absence.
The former West Bengal chief minister is said to be cut up with the Central leadership over the political line adopted by the party and sources disclosed that the West Bengal unit of the party is clear that it does not want to be held entirely responsible for the electoral debacle of the Left in West Bengal. The absence of Mr Bhattacharjee from the crucial meet evoked sharp reactions from senior politburo members.
While Bengal CPI(M) secretary Biman Bose said that the politburo spokesperson should disclose the reason behind Mr Bhattacharjee’s absence, senior CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury said it was for Mr Bhattacharjee to answer the query. Mr Yechury, however, added that Mr Bhattacharjee was not running away from responsibilities and “even today, he is attending a meeting” in West Bengal.
A fresh political-ideological document will be drafted for adoption at the 20th party congress scheduled next year. This will be a repeat of the exercise which it undertook 19 years ago at the 14th congress after the collapse of USSR. Mr Yechury said the politburo is undertaking the exercise of preparing a draft ideological approach so as to keep pace with the “changing times’’.
