CPM to chart own course
Amid reports that a section of the delegates are opposing the Chinese model of Socialism, CPI(M) politburo member Sitaram Yechury has reiterated the CPI(M) stand that the party is not following the Chinese or the Cuban model but its own Indian model.
Addressing a press conference here, Yechury said the party would decide its own course based on the conditions existing in the country from time to time.
“It is not a copy of Chinese or Russian path. We have analysed the trends in socialist countries like China, Cuba, Vietnam, North Korea and South Africa. We are learning from their experiences so that we can implement the good aspects in accordance with the situation here,’’ he said.
Yechury said the thrust of the resolution was on the new challenges faced by the country due to the onslaught of imperialism and globalization. “Our main discussion is on to how to strengthen the political alliance to fight global capitalism which is facing its worst crises. But the political alternative to replace capitalism is not strong enough at this stage,’’ he said.
He asserted that the CPI(M) was not living under the illusion of a peaceful social transformation through parliamentary democracy. “Even if we want a peaceful transition (to a new society) through the parliamentary path, I am not confident our class enemy would want that to happen. So we should be prepared for any exigency," he said while not ruling out the option of an armed struggle completely.
Over 1,000 amendments were received on the draft ideological resolution of which 984 were considered. Of the 100 suggestions, the Central Committee accepted 38.
“None of the amendments was against the basic thrust of the ideological resolution or the basic line of the party on ideological issues,’’ said Yechury, refuting the reports that a big section of the delegates had opposed the resolution.
On caste-based mobilization and identity politics, he said while the party acknowledged the struggle of groups which were facing a genuine degree of alienation, the caste-based organisations were trying to confine their fight within the caste system.
