Court plays cupid, dalit weds brahmin
A division bench of the Allahabad high court played Cupid and Amit Chaturvedi, a 22-year-old brahmin youth, overcame caste barriers to marry Kiran, a dalit girl, at a local Arya Samaj temple on Tuesday.
The Naka Hindola police, led by inspector Ajit Singh Chauhan, stood in attendance as the young couple exchanged marriage vows.
Amit, a resident of Unnao district, was in love with Kiran, a resident of Ambedkar Nagar. The two had spoken to each other over the phone thanks to a missed call and subsequently fell in love with each other.
After their families opposed the alliance, the couple had eloped in November last year. The girl’s family lodged a complaint with the police a day later and Amit was arrested and sent to jail while the girl was handed back to her family. Amit spent almost two months in jail after which his mother filed a petition before the high court claiming that her son had been framed by the police.
The court summoned Amit and Kiran and the girl admitted that she wanted to spend her life with the boy. Amit was released on February 17 and the court directed him to marry Kiran.
On Tuesday, during a court hearing, Amit apprehended a threat to his life if he went ahead with the court directive to marry Kiran.
The court, comprising Justice Uma Nath Singh and Justice Sunil Kumar Singh, immediately asked the Naka Hindola police to ensure compliance of its order and directed the cops to arrange for the marriage at the local Arya Samaj temple.
Within no time, the cops made the necessary arrangements, called in the families of the boy and the girl and got the marriage solemnised at the temple. Kiran’s family members were apparently not too happy at the inter-caste marriage and left shortly after the marriage was solemnised.
Amit’s family, on the other hand, is elated at getting an educated daughter-in-law. Kiran has done her graduation whereas Amit has not studied beyond Class 8 and works as a driver.
“For us, it does not matter that Kiran belongs to a dalit community. She is educated and what makes it more important is that my son loves her,” said Rani Chaturvedi, Amit’s mother.
The police, meanwhile, has taken written undertakings from both the families that no harm comes to the couple from their respective sides.
