Court defers order on Kani bail to May 20

A day after the DMK was defeated in the Tamil Nadu state Assembly elections, a Special CBI Court in Delhi on Saturday deferred the pronouncement of its order on the bail application of Ms Kanimozhi, daughter of the (DMK) party president and former Tamil Nadu chief minister M. Karunanidhi, citing “paucity of time” as the reason for adjourning the order.

After marking the presence of all the accused, including 43-year-old Kanimozhi, named as the co-conspirator in the 2G spectrum scam, Special CBI Judge O.P. Saini said, “Order on the bail applications, filed by accused Kanimozhi and Sharad Kumar (are) not ready due to paucity of time. Put up the bail application for order on May 20.”
The court, however, made it clear to the DMK MP and the CEO and MD of Kalaignar TV, Sharad Kumar, to attend the court proceedings on each date of the case hearing. In the supplementary chargesheet submitted to the court, the CBI has accused Ms Kanimozhi of conspiring with A. Raja. She has also been charged under the Prevention of Corruption Act for taking bribe through Kalaignar TV, a channel run by the DMK, in which the `200-crore bribe of the 2G scam was routed.
Ms Kanimozhi, who was accompanied by her husband Mr G. Aravindan and DMK parliamentary party leader Mr T.R. Baalu, was present inside the courtroom when the order was pronounced by the Special CBI judge.
Ms Kanimozhi, an elected representative in Parliament, wearing a yellowish green and red “salwar suit”, looked composed during the hearing and became a bit more cheerful after the court deferred its pronouncement order on her bail plea.
Earlier, the court had on May 7 reserved its order on the bail application of Ms Kanimozhi and Mr Sharad Kumar for Saturday.
Hundreds of DMK supporters were inside the courtroom when the special judge adjourned the pronouncement on the bail plea of Ms Kanimozhi.
She was often seen talking to former Union telecom minister A. Raja.
