Corruption won’t hit govt stability
Corruption is becoming a major issue inside and outside Parliament but it is unlikely to affect the stability of the Centre. The Congress’ allies in the UPA and the supporting parties are intact as the Opposition is not ready to face a mid-term poll.
The Opposition parties, divided between the NDA and a secular front led by the Left, are building up the tempo against the government on the corruption issue, especially the 2G spectrum allocation scam and the Commonwealth Games, after realising that the government has been on the defensive.
But the atmosphere of uncertainty will not change the current political equation inside Parliament.
“Did you notice how the BSP, SP, RJD and the BJP had helped the government during the discussion on price rise in the Lok Sabha?” a Central leader asked.
A mid-term Lok Sabha election is unlikely to throw a surprise mandate because the Opposition is not any different from the Congress. “Have you seen a Ram Rajya in any BJP-ruled state? Are they not facing the corruption issue?” another leader asked.
But a BJP official sees these developments from a different angle.
“Corruption, inflation and tyranny will be a diabolic combination. We are not interested in toppling the Union government but will discredit it as long as the Congress remains in power.”
The Opposition parties, divided ideologically, may not come together inside and outside Parliament but will be together in raising the corruption issue and attacking the Centre on it. “You will see how anti-Congress parties make corruption an issue in Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Kerala, Tripura, Orissa, Punjab and Haryana. And the Congress is not a major player in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Tamil Nadu and Jharkhand,” he said.
The BJP and the Congress are the key players in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi, which are going to polls in the next two years.
