Cops to check drunken driving during weekdays
Hyderabad: With the weekend drive against drunken driving having become rather predictable, the police authorities have hit upon a new idea to discipline the wayward drivers.
People will now run the ‘risk’ of being caught while driving drunk, thanks to a move whereby the cops will organise surprise checks at any time of the day. These inspections may be carried out on any day of the week.
So far the police avoided checking the drivers during the day as that ends up leading to traffic jams causing inconvenience to motorists.
And this time the drunk drivers won’t be able to avoid the prying eyes of the traffic police. The reason — the cops will now be equipped with the sophisticated equipment like bre-ath analysers. About 50 breath analysers have been acquired for them so that each police station has 3-4 breath analysers each. That would enable the traffic cops to concentrate on one area each during the proposed anti-rash drive campaign.
“We are going to conduct random checking of the erring drivers so that the move helps curb the menace”, said a senior traffic police officer. He also added that the new drive of the traffic police to curb drunken driving would begin in a week or two now that the Budget Session of the state As-sembly is over.
Police officials also admit that drunken driving is rampant during the day as well and not just during the night hours. In fact, once when the police carried out a checking during day time as many as 70 cases of drunk driving were registered.
