Cop U-turn on becoming approver
N.K. Amin, a police officer-accused in Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter killing case in Gujarat, on Tuesday withdrew his applications seeking pardon and turning an approver in the 2005 incident.
Amin, who was termed as a key witness by CBI in their submissions in the Gujarat high court and the Supreme Court, filed an application before additional chief judicial magistrate A.Y. Dave seeking withdrawal of his earlier pleas, his lawyer Jagdish Ramani said. Amin had filed the applications six months ago before a special CBI court here seeking to turn an approver. The application has been approved by the court, following which his two pleas for pardon under CrPC 306 and becoming an approver under CrPC 164 stood disposed off, said Mr Ramani. Amin said he wanted to withdraw from becoming an approver and seeking pardon only at the present stage and would have the right to file a similar application in future. The ex-deputy superintendent of police’s application for becoming an approver had come a day after the CBI arrested former Gujarat home minister Amit Shah on July 26 for his role in the killing. —PTI
