Cop dies as Merc rams bike, driver given bail
Two Delhi police constables were run over by a speeding Mercedes in West Delhi’s Paschim Vihar early Tuesday morning, killing one on the spot and injuring the other.
The police said the white Merc driven by an accused, who owns a chain of bars, rammed into the constables’ motorbike while they were on night patrol in Paschim Vihar’s B-1 block around 12.45 am.
The accused, who lives in Greater Kailash-1, fled from the spot but was arrested later, and charged with rash and negligent driving and causing death by negligence. He was later produced in court, and granted bail.
Constable Deepak Kumar Singh, 39, who hails from Jharkhand, died on the spot. He leaves behind his wife and two children. Amit Kumar, 23, was rushed to hospital and discharged after first aid. Both were posted at the Paschim Vihar police station.
The accused was returning home after dropping his girlfriend in Paschim Vihar when the accident took place. He drove to MGF Metropolitan Mall in Saket, close to one of his outlets, and parked his car there.
A passerby told the police a Mercedes was involved, and gave its registration number. Frantic inquiries were made in nearby malls and apartment blocks about a Mercedes moving in the area, after which the police learnt the car dropped a girl.
The accused’s girlfriend was traced and persuaded to call him back there, upon which he was arrested.
