Thiruvananthapuram: The cabinet on Wednesday decided to conduct a detailed examination to check the quality of roads that got damaged during the past one year and fix accountability with the contractors who had carried out the work.
At the cabinet briefing, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told reporters  that if the damage was due to the contractor's fault, he would be made to pay for the repair work. In the event of his refusal, he would be blacklisted.
“The government officials will face strict action if dereliction of duty is found on their part,” he said and added that all future contracts for road works would also include work performance guarantee and quality assurance.
He said the PWD would undertake urgent repair works on all roads coming under the department and the entire work would cost Rs 431 crore. Earlier, PWD Minister Ibrahim Kunju submitted a detailed report on the roads that were damaged during the recent rains.
The minister will hold meetings with officials and people’s representatives to review the condition of roads in each district. The schedule of the meetings is as follows:  Palakkad and Malappuram, August 11, Ernakulam, 12, Thiruvananthapuram, 14, Kottayam, 16, Kolllam, 18, Thrissur, 19, Kasargod and Kannur, 23, Alappuzha, 26, Idukki and Pathanamthitta, 27, Kozhikode and Wayanad, 30.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
