Congress activists clash with police, several hurt
Over 12 Congress activists were injured today in a clash with police during a protest rally by the party here demanding a CBI probe into the murder of Chief Medical Officer B. P. Singh.
"A large number of Congress workers, including senior leaders, were injured in the police cane-charge on peaceful protesters," party spokesman Subodh Srivastava told reporters.
To press for a CBI probe into the CMO's murder, the Congress took out a candlelight march from Shaheed Smarak to the office of the slain CMO. The trouble erupted when party workers were stopped by police near Gandhi Bhawan which was heavily barricaded.
When the Congress workers tried to force their way, police used water cannons and later resorted to cane-charge to scatter them. Over 12 party activist were injured in the police action, claimed Congress leaders.
Protesting the police action, UP Congress head Rita Bahuguna Joshi and former Chief Minister Ram Naresh Yadav staged a sit-in. Joshi, Yadav, local MLA Shyam Kishore Shukla and other party workers were later detained.
The party also held condolence meetings across Uttar Pradesh after which memoranda addressed to the Chief Minister demanding a CBI probe were submitted to district officials.
The CMO was gunned down in upscale Gomti Nagar area in the state capital on April two.
