Cong sweeps mayor polls in Punjab
Steered deftly by Union parliamentary affairs minister Pawan Kumar Bansal, the Congress kicked off the New Year with a clean sweep of Chandigarh’s mayoral elections on Saturday morning.
Though afflicted by rebellion, the ruling Congress successfully held onto all three top posts. Its nominee Ravinder Singh was elected mayor of Chandigarh while Kuldeep Kajheri and Sheila Phul Singh won as senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor.
Ravinder Singh defeated rebel Congress man Jagjit Singh Kang by a solitary vote at the end of a keenly contested poll. A younger brother of former Punjab Congress minister Jagmohan Kang, Jagjit Kang had the support of the Opposition BJP, Shiromani Akali Dal and Bahujan Samaj Party.
