Cong rebels queer pitch for Trinamul

Peeved with Mamata Banerjee’s “highhanded and unilateral” allotment of seats to Congress, rebel Congress candidates have jumped into the fray to queer the pitch for Trinamul Congress candidates in Murhsidabad district.
The rebel candidates claim they have the blessings of Congress MP and Murshidabad district party president Adhir Chowhdury.
Murshidabad is a Congress bastion where Trinamul Congress has fielded candidates in four seats: Sagardighi, Bhagwangola, Hairharpara and Jalangi. On Wednesday rebel Congress candidates started writing poll graffiti and campaigning in these constituencies. Aminul Islam is contesting against Trinamul Congress candidate Subrata Saha in Sagardighi, Refat Hussain Sarkar against Saghir Hussain in Bhagwangola, Mir Alamgir against Niamat Sheikh in Hariharpara and Shamsuzzoha Biswas against Idris Ali in Jalangi. Trinmul Congress Murshidabad district president and Sagardighi candidate Mr Saha hoped that better sense would prevail and dummy
Congress candidates would retire from the fray. Adhir is now tightlippped but he had earlier made it clear that the Congress workers in Murshidabad would not accept the “unjust alliance.” He had similarly spoiled the game for the Trinamul Congress in 2001 Assembly election.
Meanwhile, in Kolkata city also, two sitting Congress MLAs who were denied tickets by Ms Banerjee have also revolted. Ram Pyare Ram who had won Kabitirtha six times in a row was not renominated because Ms Banerjee did not part with a single seat in Kolkata.
He is determined to spoil the game for Trinamul Congress candidate Firhad Hakim in newly-created Port constituency. “The people of the area want me to contest as independent candidate and I have to respect their sentiments,” he said. In neighbouring Metiabruj, Congress leader Abdul Khaleq Molla was similarly denied ticket because his seat was “usurped” by the Trinamul Congress. Molla is also bent on contesting as a rebel candidate to make life miserable for Mamata’s nominee.
