Cong potshots at Modi move, LK
Union ministers and Congress leaders took potshots at the decision of the BJP to nominate Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi as the party’s prime ministerial candidate. The Congress also did not spare BJP patriarch L.K. Advani, accusing him of sowing the seeds of communalism in the country.
Union minister of state for home R.P.N. Singh alleged that “Mr Modi is a divisive force who does not believe in the country’s ethos of secularism which is harmful to the society.”
Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh, also attacked the BJP. He said the BJP has succumbed to threats from the RSS and wondered if the Sangh could still call itself a “cultural organisation”.
Sharing his thought on micro-blogging site Twitter, Mr Singh said, “BJP succumbs to threats of RSS and Ramdev and declare Modi as BJP’s PM candidate. Do we still call RSS as a Cultural Organisation?”
Even while Mr Advani apparently had been the last man standing in the way of elevation of Mr Modi, the Congress on Saturday showed no sympathy for him, while claiming that “Mr Modi is the symptom of disease of communalism brought by Mr Advani in national politics.”
Congress general secretary in charge of Haryana Shakeel Ahmed said Mr Modi would have no impact outside Gujarat. He was reacting to Mr Modi’s rally in Rewari, Haryana, on Sunday. “Every political party is free to hold rallies anywhere. We had seen what impact Mr Modi had in Karnataka,” Mr Ahmed told reporters.
