Cong played religion politics: US
Dec. 11: Finally, it’s India’s turn to be Wikileaked! In a confidential memo by the then US ambassador to India, David Mulford, released by WikiLeaks.
Post-26/11, the envoy says a section of the Congress leadership played religious politics after one of its leaders implied that Hindutva forces were involved in the Mumbai attacks.
“The Congress, after first distancing itself from the comments (of Antulay, then minority affairs minister), issued a contradictory statement which implicitly endorsed the conspiracy. Antulay’s completely unsubstantiated claims gained support in the Indian-Muslim community,” Mr Mulford wrote on Dec. 23, 2008. “Hoping to foster support for national polls, the Congress cynically pulled back from its original dismissal and lent credence to the conspiracy,” Mr Mulford wrote.
The Congress questioned the authenticity of the report on Saturday. “Nobody has authenticated it,” Congress general secretary Janardan Dwivedi said.
