Cong, JMM in deal to form Jharkhand govt
In a bid to win over new allies ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress on Friday struck a deal with the JMM to form a coalition government in Jharkhand. It also decided to go for national elections with the tribal party. The JMM is first new ally to join the UPA ahead of the 2014 elections.
Under the deal, the JMM will get the CM’s post in the state and the Congress will get a lion’s share of its 14 Lok Sabha seats. The Congress will fight 10 seats, while the JMM will contest four.
JMM leader Hemant Soren, set to become the state’s chief minister, announced the decision to form a Congress-JMM coalition government after a meeting with AICC general secretary B.K. Haripasad, in charge of Jharkhand affairs, at the state party office.
The alliance is not limited to Jharkhand. The two will fight the Lok Sabha polls together in West Bengal, Orissa, Bihar and Chhattisgarh too.
The symbolism was not lost as Hemant Soren’s father, Shibu Soren, is considered a key tribal face and tribals comprise a substantial chunk of the electorate in these states, particularly Chhattisgarh and Orissa. Chhattisgarh goes to the polls this year, while Orissa will hold Assembly polls along with next year’s Lok Sabha elections.
