Cong feels LK still in PM race
The Congress sees Mr L.K. Advani as a serious candidate of the BJP for prime ministership even as he indicated that he may not be in the race for the top post.
Mr Advani on Wednesday met RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat in Nagpur.
Though the number of PM aspirants in the BJP has been increasing with Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi, Opposition Leaders in the two Houses Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley and party president Nitin Gadkari keen to get the top post, the Congress insiders said it could be either Mr Advani or someone like Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar.
“Normally, this post goes to the single-largest party in the coalition. But in case the BJP fails to decide its nominee and the name has to be accepted by its allies in the NDA, then Nitish Kumar could emerge as a consensus candidate.”
Mr Modi cannot be acceptable to the NDA’s current and prospective allies for obvious reasons while Ms Swaraj and Mr Jaitley lack charisma and backing in the organisation. Mr Gadkari still lacks national perspective. He cannot become the Prime Minister candidate even if the RSS fully back him, they viewed.
On Wednesday, the Congress took a dig at the BJP, saying the latter was full of PM hopefuls.
Asked to comment on Mr Advani showing sings of reluctance to run for the top post, party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said: “I don’t want to go into the internal affiars of the BJP.”
However, he added: “This is an important question. At last count, I could count five aggressive candidates of PM-in-waiting.”
“As far as the Congress is concerned, there is no vacancy for the PM post,” he said.
