Cong for CBI probe into Lakhimpur case
The Congress has demanded a CBI probe into the Lakhimpur rape and murder case while the Samajwadi Party has asked the governor to convene a special session of the state Assembly.
The Samajwadi Party said that if the government does not agree to a special Assembly session, it should be dismissed without delay.
The BJP, on the other hand, sought a third post-mortem and said that the first two reports had been manipulated to make sure that rape was not confirmed. “The victim’s brother, who is an eyewitness, has said on record that his sister was raped and then killed, but the government insists that this was not the case. If there was no rape then what was the motive behind the murder of a 14-year-old,” said state BJP president Surya Pratap Shahi.
The Bahujan Samaj Party, meanwhile, criticised the Opposition for insisting that the girl had been raped before being murdered even though the two post-mortem reports had not confirmed rape.
A two-member team of the National Human Rights Commission that reached Lakhimpur late on Monday night met the victim’s family members and visited the site where the girl had been found dead on June 10.
In Lucknow, a delegation of the Congress leaders met governor B.L. Joshi and demanded a CBI investigation into the rape and murder of the 14-year-old girl, Sonam, inside a police station.
Talking to reporters, UPCC president Rita Bahuguna Joshi said, “We have requested the government to ensure a CBI probe into the heinous rape and murder of the minor girl in Nighasan police station by policemen. The CB-CID probe ordered by the state government is meaningless because we do not have any faith on the state government agencies.”
