Cong against Teso meeting
Even as the DMK is struggling to overcome hiccups to conduct the Tamil Eel-am Supporters’ Organi-sation (Teso) meet, its ally at the Centre, namely the Congress, does not agree with it that conducting such a conference would lead to the well-being of Sri Lankan Tamils. Congress feels doing something of this sort may only lead to frittering away the progress made in bringing about a rapprochement between the Sinhalese and the Tamils and the good will generated among the political class of the Island nation.
Contending that the contribution of the Congress to the betterment of the Tamils in Sri Lanka is much greater than that of the DMK or any other party, which claim to work for them, Congress sources gave details of what the Congress led UPA government has do-ne to alleviate the sufferings of the Tamils there.
Since the end of the war and the decimation of the LTTE with the killing of its leader Prabhakaran, sources pointed to the renovation of the railway tracks and the re-building of the Kangesan port by India. Construction of schools, hospitals and installation of modern equipments for treating the sick apart from laying the foundation for starting industry related work there were also pointed out. Sources also emphasised that the presence of the army in the erstwhile Tamil dominated areas has come down only due to the relentless engagement of Sri Lanka by India.
