Cong ‘suspends’ Singhvi as spokesperson

Mr Abhishek Singhvi, an eminent lawyer, was on Wednesday virtually “suspended” as the Congress spokesperson as he was barred from holding media briefings till the party high command decided on the controversy over his appearance in a lottery case in the Kerala high court.

The AICC gave ample indications in this regard in the backdrop of angry party leaders from Kerala complaining bitterly to the leadership over the action of Mr Singhvi, which has caused embarrassment to the state unit. “The party has taken serious note of it (Singhvi’s action). The matter is under consideration of the party and therefore, it is implied that he will perhaps not brief...,” party general secretary Janardhan Dwivedi said here.
Reacting to the development, Mr Singhvi, who had withdrawn from the case, said that he will always remain an “obedient” Congress worker. “The Congress high command is always final. I am and will remain an obedient Congress worker,” Mr Singhvi, who is also chairman of the AICC legal department, said. The appearance of Mr Singhvi in the high court had raised a storm in the Kerala unit which had launched a campaign against promoters of lotteries from outside the state and senior state Congress leaders had complained to the AICC over his action.
Mr Singhvi, who is also the deputy chairman of the AICC media department, had earlier said he was appearing for the Government of Bhutan in support of a Central government enactment and regulation of 2010 and it had nothing to do with politics. Later he withdrew from the case to “avoid any communication gap or controversy”.
Meanwhile, agency reports said the Congress in Kerala welcomed the move. “We are glad that the central leadership has saved the pride of the Congress workers in Kerala,” KPCC executive member V.D. Satheesan said.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
