CM Jaya delivers on freebies

AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa got into action with hours of being sworn in as Tamil Nadu’s chief minister for a third time here Monday at the head of a 34-member ministry, and immediately implemented key poll promises like free rice to ration card holders and BPL families and mangalsutra gold for girls.

She also ordered a major shakeup in the civil and police administration, with Mr J.J. Tripathy being named Chennai police commissioner.
Ms Jayalalithaa took the oath at a glittering ceremony at Madras University, watched by top national Opposition leaders, including Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi, CPI general secretary A.B. Bardhan and former Andhra chief minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. —PTI
