CM has nothing to hide, says Cong
Deploring the incidents witnessed in Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, the Congress on Monday came out in support of chief minister Omar Abdullah, who is under Opposition attack following the controversy over the custodial death of an NC worker.
Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said that the chief minister has not made “any attempt to suppress” and has himself ordered a judicial probe into the custodial death of Syed Muhammad Yusuf Shah.
This shows he has “nothing to hide,” he said.
Mr Singhvi asked as to why the Congress should “join the cacophony as some opposition parties have started breast beating there”.
He was replying to a query as to why the Congress is “mute” when the chief minister is in the thick of controversy and his resignation is being sought by some Opposition parties.
“I don’t think the Congress is at all muted... The chief minister or the coalition partner has not made any attempt to suppress. No amount of vocal noise is required. The chief minister himself has ordered a probe by a sitting judge,” he said.
He said that incidents in the Assembly were deplorable and extremely distressing and do no good to democracy.
The Congress’ reaction came as Mr Omar Abdullah broke his silence on the custodial death of Yousuf and said he has “no hesitation” in presenting himself before a judicial inquiry.
Stepping up attack on Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi in the wake of the arrest of IPS officer Sanjeev Bhatt, Mr Singhvi alleged that the BJP and the CM were running a “dictatorship” and a “vindictive state apparatus” in Gujarat which was crushing any voice of democratic opposition.
“The BJP is running an arbitrary, high-handed, vindictive and harassing state apparatus in Gujarat where Modi’s word is law. If he raises eyebrows with disdain, then someone’s fundamental rights must be crushed,” Mr Singhvi told reporters here. “Whenever Modi sneezes in Gujarat, the BJP must run helter-skelter in Delhi to disrupt Parliament or approach the President of India. They are obliged and compelled,” he said.
alleging that Mr Modi and the BJP have thrown all democratic spirit and republic norms to the wind.
He said what is being witnessed in Gujarat was an atmosphere of “intolerance of a narcissistic megalomaniac”.
