Clashes erupt in J&K’s Kishtwar
The Army held a flag march and police and CRPF reinforcements sent to enforce curfew at Kishtwar town in eastern Kashmir as communal violence erupted there Friday. Besides marring Id celebrations, the rioting left a trail of devastation of public and private property.
In Srinagar, most separatist leaders were put under house arrest to stop them attending Id gatherings. This led to clashes in some areas.
In Kishtwar, one person was killed and 20 others injured, and over two dozen shops, a filling station, a liquor outlet, a hotel and some other properties, besides two police vehicles, were torched by rampaging mobs.
Chief minister Omar Abdullah said reinforcements had been rushed to the twon. Kishtwar district magistrate Muhammad Saleem said the situation was tense but “efforts are underway to restore peace”.
