A student from Hyderabad, pursuing medicine in New Jersey, died and three others were injured in a road accident when their SUV collided with a police vehicle on Wednesday.
The girl, Vishwaja Muppa, 21, was a student of Stony Brook University, New Jersey, in the United States.
The incident happened at 1.30 am on Wednesday (local time) when their vehicle collided with the vehicle of a Suffolk county police officer at an intersection near Port Jefferson station.
According to a county police official, the traffic lights, where the fatal accident occurred, were not operational at the time of the crash. Also, it was unclear whether the bad weather caused by superstorm Sandy played any role in the collision.
Police said the Suffolk county police officer, Rene Garcia, was returning from a storm-related call at the time of the accident.
The driver of the vehicle has not been arrested or charged with any traffic violations. Mr Garcia was taken to the police station and was later released.
