Chennai woman, 53, blessed with baby boy
When their their 27-year-old son died in a road accident in 2010, Sulochana and Mani were shattered.
They then made up their minds not to live the rest of their lives childless, but the odds were against them. At the age of 53, Sulochana was well past menopause and had also had a tubectomy.
Her husband Mani, a storekeeper with MTC, was 57 years old and well past his prime.
However, they were keen on having another child and a month after their son’s death, they approached a city hospital for help.
A year-and-a-half , and two IVF programmes later, Sulochana gave birth to a healthy boy at Lifeline Multispeciality Hospitals here, on Monday.
“The first IVF cycle performed in February 2011 failed. Sulochana did not conceive. However, she did not get discouraged and decided to try again,” recalled Dr Loganayaki, infertility specialist at the center.
“As the mother was past menopause, we could not use her own egg. We used a donor egg from her relative and the sperm from her husband Mani and fertilised them in the lab.
The embryo was then implanted into Sulochana’s uterus and she carried the fetus to a full term,” explained Dr Loganayaki, whose team performed a cesarean to deliver the baby.
Though Sulochana is a hypertension patient, there were no complications through the pregnancy and both mother and baby are doing well.
