Charges on Hansie; Gibbs, Boje left out
Nearly 13 years after the match-fixing scandal broke out, the Delhi police on Monday filed its chargesheet in the case, naming former South African cricket team captain Hansie Cronje. However, the names of his compatriot cricketers Herschelle Gibbs and Nicky Boje have been left out in the case that came to light in 2000. Both Gibbs and Boje have been names as witnesses in the chargesheet.
The Delhi police’s Crime Branch has in its 93-page chargesheet has named Cronje, Sanjeev Chawla, Rajesh Kalra, Manmohan Khattar, Sunil Dara, alias Bittu, and Krishan Kumar, brother of slain T-Series founder Gulshan Kumar, as accused in the case and has chargesheeted them for offences of cheating and criminal conspiracy under the IPC.
Speaking to this newspaper, Delhi police commissioner Neeraj Kumar said they did not have any evidence against South African cricketers Nicky Boje and Herschelle Gibbs. Mr Kumar said Krishan Kumar, the brother of Gulshan Kumar, played the role of punter and bookie in match-fixing.
The commissioner also said they intercepted calls of some of the accused persons.
Gibbs had accepted before the Kings Commission of Inquiry, constituted in South Africa to probe the match-fixing scandal, that he was offered money by Cronje for under-performance while Boje had denied his involvement, it said.
The chargesheet states there is “sufficient evidence” to prove that the accused had entered into a conspiracy to fix matches played here between India and South Africa in February-March 2000. “From the investigation conducted so far, there is sufficient evidence to prove that the accused persons... had entered into a criminal conspiracy to fix the cricket matches played between India and South Africa from February 16, 2000 to March 20, 2000 in India,” it said.
