Centre plans equal opportunity body
As the ruling UPA-II is set to enter the last year of its tenure after the Budget Session of Parliament, the government is preparing to enact a law during the session to constitute an equal opportunity commission to look into issues related to minorities, particularly Muslims.
Keeping in view the findings of the Sachar Committee Report, which highlighted the backwardness of the Muslim community vis-a-vis the others, government sources revealed that the GoM headed by finance minister P. Chidambaram has already cleared a proposal to enact a law to create an equal opportunity commission that will have statutory powers to ensure implementation of minority-related schemes.
