Centre: Minimum age of marriage can’t be fixed
New Delhi, Feb. 8: The Centre said it is in favour of curbing child marriage but could not bring uniformity in the age of “adulthood” for women in view of the conflicting laws, including those governing marriages.
The additional solicitor-general, Ms Indira Jaisingh, told a bench of Justices Dalveer Bhandari and A.K. Ganguly that “uniformity on the age for all laws is not possible as every Act has been framed with a peculiar social objective.”
The government’s law officer made the statement after the bench asked her to file a comprehensive affidavit on the government’s stand on the issue, which was brought before the top court by the Delhi State Commission for Women.
Ms Jaisingh cited more than half-a-dozen laws which have different definitions of adulthood.
