Central meet to curb illegal phone-tapping
After framing strict guidelines on phone-tapping by the central agencies, the Centre has convened a meeting of chief secretaries and DGPs of all states on Tuesday to discuss putting in place a heavily-guarded mechanism to curb illegal phone-tapping and prevent misuse by state agencies and service provides by imposing heavy
penalties on offenders.
Following the Supreme Court directions to the Centre to frame guidelines for interception of telephone conversations to prevent illegal phone-tapping, the government has put in place strict procedures which includes creation of a special unit or cell within the law enforcement agencies to deal with all aspects of interception of phones and emails.
It has said that all intercepts should be destroyed within six months and clearances from the competent authority will be required to retain such intercepts or in cases where further surveillance is required.
The meeting will be chaired by home secretary Gopal K. Pillai.
Meanwhile, the Centre has ordered security audit of all vital installations, including nuclear stations, oil refineries and military bases, across the country. The move has come following security concerns arising of last week’s terrorist attack on a naval base in neighbouring Pakistan.
