CBI seeks more security for investigating officer
Special director of Intelligence Bureau (IB) Rajendra Kumar may not be named in the first chargesheet, to be filed by the CBI by July 3, in the Ishrat Jahan encounter case on account of the ongoing tussle between the MHA and the agency over the issue of probing the role of the IB officer in the case. The agency, sources said, will seek more time from court to probe the conspiracy behind the encounter of Mumbai-based teenager in 2004.
Talking to reporters, CBI director said, “We have promised the Gujarat HC that we will file a chargesheet on July 4 in this case and we will maintain our time limit. We will file a preliminary charge-sheet.” The agency on Monday also demanded more security for its senior investigating officer (IO), Sandeep Tamgadge, who has been probing the Ishrat Jahan encounter case. CBI sources claimed that Tamgadge has received death threats.
Reacting to this, Mr Sinha said, “We have asked home ministry and Maharashtra government to provide security to our officers probing the case”. Sources in the CBI said Maharashtra police has assured that all the required security will be provided to the IO investigating the case.
“Only those state police officers will be named in the first chargesheet who were directly involved in the encounter”, sources said. Those who are part of the conspiracy, which led to the encounter, will be named in the supplementary chargesheet, they added.
Meanwhile, MHA sources indicated that Mr Kumar may challenge any possible move by the CBI to name him in its chargesheet in the fake encounter case.
Sources said the home ministry is understood to have advised Mr Kumar to challenge the possibility on the issue of not obtaining prior sanction from the home ministry to take action against him.
