CBI questions Lalit Bhanot
The CBI for the first time on Thursday questioned Lalit Bhanot, secretary general of the Organising Committee (OC) of the Commonwealth Games and close aide of committee’s chairman Suresh Kalmadi. The agency has booked Mr Bhanot and director general of the OC, V.K. Verma, in connection with alleged irregularities in awarding of contract to a Swiss company for result update system.
According to sources, Mr Bhanot was questioned about the role played by other top brass of the OC in awarding contract worth `107 crores to the Swiss company — Time, Scoring and Results (TSR). The CBI had conducted searches at the residences of Mr Bhanot and Mr Verma and nine other places in connection with irregularities in TSR system contract on November 30.
Mr Bhanot was reportedly asked by the interrogators about the role played by other OC members and representatives of various federations in awarding contract to M/s Swiss Timing, sources said.
Earlier, immediately after the CBI raids at his residence, he had claimed that the decisions were taken jointly by the executive board of the CWG, which also included government representatives.
It is believed that Mr Bhanot revealed the name of certain top OC brass who played a crucial role in awarding contract to the Swiss company. On the basis of his questioning on Thursday, CBI officials are planning to question other OC members also, sources said.
They added that the possibility of Mr Kalmadi being questioned in connection with the case can not be ruled out.
