CBI probes CWG project delinking
The CBI has recently begun a probe into the reasons for delinking six major projects worth several hundred crores of rupees from the list of Commonwealth Games projects by the authorities concerned.
According to sources, the CBI has reportedly started collecting documents of all projects, which were delinked from the CWG projects. The agency will also probe the circumstances under which the projects were delinked, sources said.
“The mega projects which were delinked include Shastri Park tunnel corridor for connecting east Delhi to north and northeast Delhi, project related to connecting of Bahadurshah Zafar Marg to the Games Village and the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, elevated east-west corridor from east Delhi to CP area for connecting the Games Village to the IG stadium velodrome and Yamuna Sports Complex, Masoodpur corridor improvement and Mahipalpur tunnel project, right turn-signal free junction at Josep Broz Tito Marg and Siri Fort Road for the sports complex,” sources said.
Besides, improvement of the SP Mukherjee Marg corridor for decongestion of traffic near the Old Delhi Railway Station was also delinked.
This too is being probed by the agency, the sources said.
The SP Mukherjee project for removing decongestion was even approved by the Delhi Development Authority’s (DDA) technical committee back in March 2005, sources said.
But after certain modifications by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), the project was again referred to DDA and finally could not be started. Now the agency is probing the reasons which ultimately forced authorities to delink the project from the CWG, sources said.
“As far as Masoodpur corridor improvement work is concerned, the reason for dropping the project from CWG is still not known. The elevated east-west corridor from east Delhi to CP area project could not be started because of the delay in appointment of consultant by the authority concerned. The agency is probing the reason behind the delay in the appointment of a consultant,” sources said.
Officials of certain government departments are likely to be questioned by the agency in this regard, sources added.
Meanwhile, the income-tax department on Friday said that it would share the documents seized by it during its two rounds of raids with the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and other agencies. Sources said that various agencies have already approached the I-T department for information and sharing of files.
The department, which has in its custody a large number of documents, including those relating to the contracts awarded by the Organising Committee (OC) of the Games, would share them with various government agencies to streamline the probe, sources said.
On Thursday, over 300 income-tax personnel had swooped in on more than 50 premises of companies across the country to probe alleged financial irregularities in the Commonwealth Games contracts.
