CBI FIR in CWG contracts soon

The CBI is all set to register FIRs in connection with alleged irregularities committed in awarding contracts related to renovation and construction of a couple of stadia and the Barapulla elevated road project. The total worth of the contracts to the tune of `727 crores in a day or two.

Besides, the agency on Monday arrested Sandeep Wadhwa, managing director of an Indo-Swiss overlays supplying consortium, in connection with its ongoing probe related to the award of overlays contracts (worth `640 crores) for the Games.
According to sources, the agency has collected sufficient evidence against certain government officials, as well as private contractors, involved in three major Games related projects — Shivaji Stadium, Talkatora Stadium and Barapulla elevated road.
Initial probe by the agency has reportedly revealed that officials of the CPWD involved in Talkatora stadium (worth `167 crores) allegedly invited tenders twice to favour a particular private contractor. The agency has found evidence against officials who invited tender for the second time in 2007 by rejecting their previous “justification”, which was at lower price, sources added.
As far as construction work at Shivaji stadium is concerned (worth `160 crores), sources said, evidence has been collected against the officials who awarded the contract to that company, which had no experience of working in India and also for any government projects, sources added. Finally, the project was left barely half complete and was, in essence, de-linked with the CWG, sources said. In the case of Barapula elevated road project too, delay in awarding the contract by the PWD of the Delhi government resulted in over expenditure to the government. The project was finally completed at a cost of `400 crore. It will register three separate FIRs in connection with irregularities.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
