CBI to close probe into medical college upgrade
The CBI, which is probing the multicrore National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) scam in Uttar Pradesh, has decided to close its investigations into three preliminary enquiries (PEs) registered to look into alleged irregularities in upgradation of the King George’s Medical College (Lucknow), purchase of generators and awareness programme conducted under the state family planning projects in the state.
According to sources, the agency officials did not find anything suspicious in the contracts awarded for these three projects. “As far as contract (worth `7 crore) for the upgradation of the King George’s Medical College (Lucknow) is concerned, probe by the agency revealed that no irregularities were committed while awarding the contract. This is the reason that CBI has decided to close its investigations”, sources said. “Probe also revealed that no irregularities were committed by the state government officials while purchasing generators (of around `8 crore) under the Centrally-sponsored sch-eme in the state. No irregularities were found even in spending around `9 crore under the state family planning projects in the state also”, sources said.
The agency, however, is planning to register 15 fresh cases related to NRHM scam. The CBI has so far registered total 18 cases in the NRHM scam. The agency, which is facing shortage of investigators, can not register more than 15 fresh cases related to the scam, sources said.
