Car driver opens death door for 2
A four-year-old schoolgirl and her grandfather were crushed under a speeding truck as they fell off their motorbike after hitting the door of a Tata Sumo opened carelessly by its driver at Medavakkam Monday.
Sathyamoorthy, 51, a junior engineer attached to the Perumbakkam electricity board office, was “fairly fast” on his bike trying to reach grandchild Keshika to school in Chembakkam.
Cops said Sumo driver Murali suspected he had a flat tyre, pulled over and opened the door to verify. He did not bother to check the traffic behind.
“It was a tragic coincidence. The man and his grandchild fell right in the path of a speeding truck carrying boulders,” a traffic inspector said.
There was yet another cruel irony — Mother had brought Keshika, her only child, from their Thanjavur home to get quality education in a CBSE school. The child’s agriculturist father Ganeshan would frequently visit them.
Police took truck driver Sridhar, 35, and Murali, 22, into custody. Locals complained cops did little to control speeding trucks carrying building material in Medavakkam and surrounding areas witnessing high realtor activity.
“Why are cops allowing trucks during peak hours? The answer is obvious,” said a local resident.
