Candidate’s kin dies, TMC under fire
The father of an Independent candidate who was shot at on Monday succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday triggering a clamour for the arrest of the Trinamul Congress Birbhum district president Anubrata Mondal.
Opposition parties alleged that Mr Mondal was responsible for fanning violence in Birbhum by making belligerent speeches against political opponents. “Sagar Ghosh was a victim of Mr Mondal’s hate speech. He must be immediately arrested,” Congress spokesperson Abdul Mannan said. His demand was echoed by CPI(M) and BJP also.
Ghosh 71, the father of Independent candidate of Kasba gram panchayat in Birbhum, Hriday Ghosh, was admitted to Burdwan Medical College and Hospital after he was shot during panchayat poll on Monday. He passed away on Tuesday. Mr Mondal had on July 17 openly asked his party supporters to attack and burn down the houses of independent candidates and hurl bomb at policemen if they tried to help them. In Birbhum a large of number dissident Trinamul Congress activists contested the just concluded panchayat polls as independent candidates.
Realising that the independent candidates would affect the electoral prospects of ruling party candidates, Mr Mondal and his supporters allegedly first intimidated and then targeted them.
On July 17, Mr Mondal made a highly inflammatory speech . Taking serious note of the speech, state election commissioner Mira Pande asked the district administration to initiate action against Mr Mondal.
