Call made during crime will nail accused: Cops
The five youth who are accused of gangraping a 19-year-old telephone operator at the defunct Shakti Mills on July 31 and also suspected to have victimised several other girls ended up leaving behind a crucial piece of evidence that the police will now use to nail them in the case.
After gangraping the girl on the evening of July 31, one of the accused made a phone call to another accused and called him to the spot. The victim had mentioned details of this phone call in her statement (The Asian Age has a copy) to the Bhandup police in the first week of September.
The investigators have collected the details of this phone call. “This call will prove as a crucial piece of evidence against the accused and help us in establishing the exact sequence of the events, thus proving the presence of the accused at the spot at the same time, as there is no eye-witness in the incident,” said an officer requesting anonymity.
Meanwhile, the victim and her friend, who she married on Tuesday, identified the fifth and last accused Ashfaq Dawood Shaikh during the Test Identification Parade (TIP) conducted in the Byculla jail. “The result of the TIP, which was conducted in the presence of a magistrate, was positive,” confirmed a crime branch officer.
The police has arrested Vijay Jadhav (20), Mohammad Kasim Hafiz Shaikh (20), Mohammed Salim Ansari (27), Ashfaq Dawood Shaikh and a minor boy earlier in the case. Jadhav, Shaikh and Ansari are also allegedly involved in the gangrape of 22-year old photojournalist on August 22.
