Cabinet clears GoM package
The Union Cabinet on Thursday accepted all 22 recommendations by the Group of Ministers on the Bhopal gas tragedy. These include enhanced compensation of Rs 1,265.56 crores, extradition of former Union Carbide CEO Warren Anderson and filling a curative petition in the Supreme Court.
Announcing the decisions taken at the Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, information and broadcasting minister Ambika Soni said: “The Cabinet, which considered the report of the GoM on the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy, accepted all its 22 recommendations.” She, however, evaded a direct question on the question of liability. The minister said: “The Cabinet has decided that the opinion of the attorney-general would be sought on whether Dow Chemicals or any other successor to Union Carbide Corporation or Union Carbide India Ltd could be held liable.”
