Buzz in U.P. over Amar’s return to SP
Uttar Pradesh political circles are abuzz with speculation that Amar Singh might be returning to the Samajwadi Party. Mr Singh’s recent publicly-voiced praise for SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav — the first time since being expelled from the Samajwadi Party in February 2010 — has added credence to these reports.
Mr Singh, in Varanasi last weekend, said Mr Yadav’s decision to continue supporting the UPA government reflected his political maturity.
Highly-placed SP sources say the Shahi Imam, Syed Ahmad Bukhari, is trying to persuade the Samajwadi leadership to accept Mr Singh back in the party fold. Unconfirmed sources say the Shahi Imam even organised a meeting between Mr Yadav and Mr Singh in Delhi recently. A source said: “Both leaders spoke cordially and sorted out some differences.”
It appears Mr Yadav has been unable to fill the void created after Mr Singh’s expulsion, and in order to play a bigger role in national politics he needs someone with Mr Amar Singh’s managerial skills.
