Brother kills sister for ‘honour’
Emulating the horrific spate of honour killings in neighbouring Haryana, Punjab witnessed its fifth instance of similar crimes on Wednesday when a young man strangled and killed his 14-year-old sister for being friendly with a village boy he did not approve of.
In village Landke near Moga town, Lakhwinder Singh, who was married only recently and his wife is expecting their first child, attacked his kid sister Preeti after she reportedly scoffed at his orders to stop meeting the boy. Neighbours told the police Lakhwinder suspected the teenagers were sexually involved.
According to officers of the police station at Mehna village, “Lakhwinder had apparently meant to counsel his sister but suddenly lost his temper and strangled the life out of her.”
The brother and sister were alone in their home at the time of the incident. Lakhwinder’s pregnant wife is away to her parents’ village and Paramjit Kaur, their mother, was out visiting relatives in a neighbouring village. The police is hunting for Lakhwinder who fled Landke soon after committing the crime.
This is the fifth instance of an honour killing in Punjab since early July. On August 8, a youngster Raja Ram of Sangrur was allegedly murdered by killers hired by his girlfriend’s family. On August 19, Jaspal Singh of Chandarpurana village was arrested after he shot dead his daughter and her lover.
