BJP will counter Cong with kisan panchayats
Even as Congress MP Rahul Gandhi keeps the heat on the Mayawati government over the issue of land acquisition, the BJP has decided to further add to the pressure by holding kisan panchayats along the Yamuna expressway belt.
Senior BJP leaders will be visiting the region to hold panchayats where farmers can air their grievances against the state government.
“There are reports of simmering resentment among farmers because instead of setting up industrial hub on the acquired prime agricultural land, the Mayawati government is selling off acquired land for the purpose of setting up sprawling farmhouses to affluent people. Those who had given their land so that industries could be set up and provide employment to their families, are now feeling cheated,” said BJP state president Surya Pratap Shahi.
The BJP, which was caught on the wrong foot with Mr Gandhi’s visit to Bhatta Parsaul last week, is now trying to derive maximum mileage from the issue and repair the damage. As a first step, Mr Rajnath Singh sat on a 24-hour fast to express solidarity with farmers in Bhatta Parsaul and now the party is planning panchayats with farmers. Mr Shahi said that “The party has already set up base committees comprising local workers who would carry out preliminary investigation and hand over the report which will eventually be followed by visits by the party stalwarts”.
