BJP wants PM to intervene
Seeking Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s intervention to ensure security for the minority community in Jammu and Kashmir after communal clashes broke out in Kishtwar town, the BJP on Friday expressed concern over the incident.
While BJP chief Rajnath Singh called the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj spoke to state chief minister Omar Abdullah on the issue. The party demanded enhanced security in the area to bring the situation under control.
“The Prime Minister assured me that the situation will be quickly brought under control as the Army has been called in Kishtwar,” Mr Singh said on Twitter. Ms Swaraj spoke to Mr Abdullah, following which the chief minister called her and said the Army has been deployed and more forces were being sent to the affected area. Speaking on the issue, BJP spokesperson Sudanshu Trivedi said that the Prime Minister assured the BJP chief that all effective measures will be taken to control the situation. He claimed the situation in the area was “still not fully under control.”
Dr Trivedi said the party received information that “communal harmony was disturbed” in the area due to some events that took place at around 9 pm. He claimed that though curfew was imposed by the state government, “it does not appear to be effective.”
