BJP ups pressure for Guv’s recall
In an aggressive move to whip up public sentiment over the governor’s recommendation for imposing President’s rule and the delay in according approval for holding the legislature session from June 2, BJP leaders hit the streets on Friday.
Before launching the state-wide agitation, the BJP set a five-day deadline for the Union government to recall Mr H.R. Bhardwaj.
In the city, party leaders and workers from Bengaluru Urban and rural districts, converged at the Mahatma Gandhi statue on MG Road, where their three-hour dharna, brought traffic to a standstill from Queen’s Road to Anil Kumble Circle on MG Road.
Except for Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa and home minister R. Ashok, almost all ministers, BJP MLAs, MPs and BBMP corporators participated in the dharna. Sources said the chief minister and home minister were advised against participating in the dharna by party leaders as it would tantamount to the government launching a stir against the Governor.
State BJP president K.S. Eshwarappa and party general secretary Ananth Kumar urged the Union government to reject the report of the Governor. Going a step further, Mr Eshwarappa said the governor was a ‘Congress agent’.
“If the Centre invokes Article 356 of the Constitution against the BJP government, our workers will not allow the JD(S) and Congress leaders to move freely on the streets”, Mr Eshwarappa warned.
