BJP: UPA govt lacks coordination

The main Opposition BJP on Wednesday alleged that UPA government was “lacking in coordination” and “collective responsibility” during the recently concluded Monsoon Session of Parliament. The party, however, credited itself of compelling the government to either “refer or defer” legislations like Civil Nuclear Bill and education tribunal bill. On the Kashmir issue, the BJP claimed it stood its ground even when its view on the issue was entirely different from other parties. The party also advised the government against a “panic reaction” like diluting the Armed Forces Special Powers Act. The party said it would “demoralise” the Armed forces in the Valley.
“The BJP is extremely satisfied with the performance of its members in both Houses. Where the Opposition parties came with us we provided a united Opposition, where the government came with us we cooperated and when neither government nor Opposition supported us, we strongly stood our ground,” the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Ms Sushma Swaraj said. She said while the party forced the government to defer the Educational Tribunal Bill and Enemy Property Bill, it supported the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damages Bill, 2010 when its concerns were incorporated in the bill. Ms Swaraj said BJP put the government in the dock in both Houses of Parliament on the price rise issue and “demolished the government’s contention that inflation and growth go together.”
The party also claimed that on issues like Commonwealth Games preparations and Bhopal Gas Tragedy issue, it put the government on the backfoot.
The Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mr Arun Jaitley, maintained that the BJP’s performance as a “responsible principal Opposition” in the session was a “synthesis of Opposition when required and cautious cooperation when the situation so warranted”. However, the government was lacking in collective responsibility, he said.
Mr Jaitley said there was no internal coordination between various ministries and “one minister was stopping other’s projects.”
The BJP leadership also rubbished suggestions of a ‘deal’ between the party and the Congress during the session over the nuclear bill.
