BJP to outline poll board meet July 4?
After some senior BJP leaders raised objection to the manner in which Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi held a meeting of general secretaries and other office bearers recently to discuss poll-related strategies, when the campaign committee he heads is not even formed, BJP chief Rajnath Singh is likely to hold a meeting of the parliamentary board to send out a message that the board is the highest authority in the party. The meeting, likely to be held on July 4, will decide members of the campaign committee for the general polls and the outline of the committee.
Mr Modi had held a meeting of national general secretaries and other office bearers within days after he was named as the head of the campaign committee. His elevation had upset many in the party including senior leader L.K. Advani. Mr Modi is considered as the top contender for the post of party’s Prime Ministerial candidate.
Some senior leader, it was learnt, were upset over the way in which Mr Modi presided over the meeting, giving an impression that he was the first among equals. These leaders also objected that when the campaign committee is yet to be formed, how can Mr Modi hold such a meeting to discuss poll related strategies. But the BJP chief, sources disclosed, wants to give a message to the party top brass that when it comes to discussing the national strategies, parliamentary board will have to be taken on board. Mr Modi is also a member of this board.
However, the Gujarat chief minister is yet to confirm whether or not he will attend the parliamentary board meeting. If he does not attend the meeting, in that scenario, a meeting of the national general secretaries and programme implementation and coordination committee members will be held on July 4.
Other than the national general secretaries and members of the programme implementation and coordination committee, some members of the parliamentary board including former party chiefs Nitin Gadkari and M. Venkaiah Naidu are also expected to be part of the campaign committee.
