BJP MLAs under I-T scanner in K’taka

In an unprecedented move, the income tax department (investigation wing) on Monday morning raided the house and premises of a Cabinet minister and other prominent BJP legislators for reportedly possessing unaccounted wealth in Bellary, Hospet and Bengaluru. In a day-long operation backed with the armed police support, the IT sleuths raided the house and premises of health minister B. Sriramalu besides 60 other places, including the two rooms in the legislators home used by these politicians.

Premises of legislators — B. Nagendra and Suresh Babu, tourism minister Janardhan Reddy’s long time lawyer and trusted lieutenant Ragahavacharlu, Swastik Nagaraj and Karapudi Mahesh — close confidantes of the Reddy brothers were also searched.
It is reliably learnt that the tax officials conducted simultaneous raids at the premises of these legislators and their mining associates in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu with the help of their counterparts in these states, who issued the search warrants. Even as the IT department refused to part with any information regarding the raids, well-placed sources said that the intelligence wing of the department, which was keeping a vigil on the massive mining irregularities in the state, reportedly tipped off the investigation wing.
While sources in the department said the raids were conducted purely on the mining irregularities. The searches have come at a time when the BJP is facing allegations of horse-trading over “Operation Kamal” to allegedly woo Opposition MLAs.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
