BJP demands Maya resignation
The main Opposition BJP on Wednesday demanded resignation of Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati over the issue of farmers protests in Greater Noida.
With AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi meeting the agitating farmers and pledging his support for them by sitting on a dharna, the party also asked the Centre and
the Congress “not to indulge in theatrics” on the farmer agitation and sought to know what was preventing the Centre from taking strong action against the Mayawati government despite having powers.
Senior BJP leader Rajnath Singh said, “It is disheartening to know that when senior Congress leaders like Digvijay Singh and Rahul Gandhi visited the village, the (Uttar Pradesh) government removed Section 144 (that bans Assembly of more than five people)”.
The party alleged that the Mayawati government and the Congress are “hand-in-glove” and demanded that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh take strict action against the “ineffective” Uttar Pradesh government.
The senior BJP leader will be sitting on a 24-hour hungerstrike on Thursday in Ghaziabad.
The Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj, her counterpart in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley, party vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and NDA convenor Sharad Yadav will lend him support and address the meeting.
The party also alleged that by sitting on a dharna, Mr Gandhi was “fanning the flames” already burning in the state.
